Summary

In celebration of the 100th birthday of the national university, it is only fitting that we take a look at what constitutes legal education, why it is necessary and which direction legal education could or should take. Attention needs to be turned to the necessity and potential development of legal education in the Estonian language. Estonian universities are the only places in the world to provide legal education in Estonian, which is why the School of Law of the University of Tartu as the national university carries an important role in the development, promotion, and strengthening of legal education in the Estonian language. This article provides a brief overview of the considerations the School of Law of the University of Tartu needs to take in order to maintain its position at the top of academic legal education institutions not only in the Baltic Sea region, but in the Nordic region as a whole. It also views the challenges that Estonian-language legal education presents to the University of Tartu. In addition, it also answers the question of whether academic legal education in the Estonian language even has a future or whether legal education will also become international, making the use of English-language curricula standard.
