Summary

Possibilities offered by information technology today have significantly broadened the opportunities for work outside the usual workplace. Teleworking, a new form of employment is becoming more and more popular. Teleworking involves a variety of ways of working ranging from exclusively external work in which case an employee does not work in a company to a teleservice centre where an employer can rent workplaces with state-of-the-art equipment and an Internet connection.
Telework will inevitably bring about a change in the basic principles of employment law and regulation. The regulation of employment relations as developed in the 19th century must undergo a significant overhaul. Today is the age of information and therefore the knowledge of employees constitutes power for the employer.
Teleworking has both positive and negative aspects for employees and employers alike. However, it should be born in mind that the spread of this form of work is inevitable. This also applies to Estonia where problems relating to different forms of teleworking may soon arise as a result of a rapid spread of the Internet in Estonia.
Estonian employment legislation does not contain direct obstacles to the regulation of the status of teleworkers. However, the Estonian employment legislation as a whole needs to be significantly amended and updated.
