Summary

The law of refugees has been an unknown area of law in Estonia for a long time. The present article is aimed at introducing this interesting institution of international law. The article provides an overview of the development of the law of refugees, its characteristics, the status and categories of refugees, the forms of asylum and the conditions for application for and granting of asylum. Further, issues concerning refugees in Estonia are addressed in view of Estonia’s possible accession to the European Union.
