Summary

The article provides an overview of the statistics of theft and hijacking of motor cars. In recent years, the number of stolen or hijacked vehicles has risen dramatically. However, the figures vary from region to region. The author points out that the police are often not effective enough in discovering such crimes. Further, the author makes a suggestion to eliminate the distinctions between hijacking and theft of vehicles in the Estonian Criminal Code. A hijacking of cars should be regarded as any other theft.
