Author:
Issue 1997/4
Pg 177-180

Summary

Apart from national labour legislation, international rules also affect regulation in employment law, providing for several important principles. ILO conventions, part of which have also been ratified by Estonia, constitute the main international source of employment law. In addition, corresponding EU directives also are of great importance in view of Estonia’s potential accession with the EU.
This article deals with such internationally recognised principles of employment law as prohibition of forced labour, freedom and right of association, prohibition of discrimination and freedom of contract, and the compliance of these principles with the corresponding Estonian laws and the draft Labour Code.
